From Fantasy to Franchise: How to Build a Universe Worthy of Devotion
Building a world for your game, book, film, or graphic novel requires meticulous and passionate care. The line between inspiring devotion or apathy among your fans can be easily crossed. In this design keynote, renowned fantasy author R.A. Salvatore walks us through his process, drawing lessons learned from his iconic body of work, such as the Forgotten Realms series that forms the creative foundation of the Baldur's Gate games. He then presents an examination of world building as a work in progress, through a sneak peek of his work with 38 Studios.
Wulfgar settled back on his heels, studying his friend and making no move to follow. He couldn't help but contrast Morik to Drizzt at that moment. The rogue was turning to leave, while the drow would, and often had, eagerly rushed headlong into such adventure as a giant lair. Wulfgar recalled the time he and Drizzt had dispatched an entire lair of verbeeg, a long and brutal fight but one that Drizzt had entered laughing. Wulfgar thought of the last fight he had waged beside his ebon-skinned friend, against another band of giants. That time they'd chased them into the mountains after learning that the brutes had set their eyes on the road to Ten-Towns.
It seemed to Wulfgar that Morik and Drizzt were similar in so many ways, but in the most important ways they were nothing alike. It was a contrast that continually nagged at Wulfgar, a reminder of the startling differences in his life now, the difference between that world north of the Spine of the World and this world south of it.
"There may only be a couple of giants," Wulfgar suggested. "They rarely gather in large numbers."
Morik pulled out his slender sword and his dagger. "A hundred hits to fell one?" he asked. "Two hundred? And all the time I spend sticking the behemoth two hundred times, I'll be comforted by the thought that one strike from the giant will crush me flat."
Wulfgar's grin widened. "That's the fun of it."
This collection contains The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World, and Sea of Swords.
Wizards of the Coast Signs Best-Selling Author R.A. Salvatore to New Book Deal
Today, Wizards of the Coast LLC announced a new six-book deal with New York Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore. Published by Wizards of the Coast, the first book is scheduled to release in 2011 with a new book anticipated to follow once per year after that.
Salvatore’s thrilling novels have sold millions of copies in more than a dozen languages and have appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list 22 times. His most popular character, Drizzt Do’Urden from the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, will be featured in each of his six upcoming books.
“I’ve always maintained that I would keep writing Drizzt as long as it was fun and as long as people wanted to read it. Now I understand that this journey with Drizzt is more than just ‘fun’ for me,” says Salvatore. “Writing Drizzt is an exercise of constantly reminding myself to find new trails and adventures in my own life; the character remains fresh to me because there’s always a new turn, sometimes painful, often joyous, always alive.”
This new agreement marks more than 20 years that Salvatore has been working with TSR/Wizards of the Coast. From his first novel, The Crystal Shard, to his most recent release, The Ghost King, Salvatore’s novels have brought adventure and excitement to fans and fantasy readers around the world.
“We are delighted to ink a new multi-book deal with R.A. Salvatore, and we look forward to continuing our shared creative journey,” said Liz Schuh, Brand Director for D&D. “Together, we will bring six more thrilling Dungeons & Dragons stories featuring Drizzt Do’Urden to our loyal fan base.”
When asked how he feels about the new book deal, Salvatore affirmed, “My relationship with the whole team at Wizards of the Coast could not be better. And nothing makes me happier than the prospect of walking new roads with old friends.”
RASalvatore.com's latest e-signing has come to an end. Books will be signed and shipped sometime in the coming week.

. . . shook its head wildly, and Guenhwyvar went flying away. Then the beast swung its head back into the room with battering ram force at Drizzt, a blow that would have killed him had it hit him squarely.
But no one ever hit . . .

As the head swung in, Drizzt dived over sideways, just ahead of it. Still, the sheer weight of the glancing blow had him rolling in an attempt to absorb the force, until he ran out of room, coming up hard into the wrecked chamber’s side wall, a burst of embers flying up behind him.
Stung and a bit dazed, but hardly down, Drizzt rushed back at the beast. . . .
